I am writing to ask all of you to watch Oprah tomorrow. We all know my love of Oprah, but I don't think I've ever asked you to ask a specific episode. However, tomorrow's episode is Lisa Ling Reports: How We Treat the Animals We Eat, which is an issue that I feel passionately about.
I truly believe one of the most important questions to ask as moral, ethical people is "Where does my food come from?"
We eat three or more times a day and the decisions we make affect our psyche, our body, our budgets, our communities, our planet. It is a gift to yourself to become informed on this issue.
So, watch!

I recently took part in a conversation that really drove home the Michael Pollen directive of "eat foods that your [great]grandmother would recognize":
I was on the phone to my grandmother, who was raised on a small Eastern KY farm in the Twenties, when she remarked that my uncle had recently purchased a couple of chickens from a local farm. It was clear that they were free-range in every sense of the word without carrying that title. I guess my cousin had made some derisive statements about the "old-timey" chicken, and my granny was expecting me to do the same. I put on my Intellectual City Girl hat and gave an impassioned speech about the importance of free-range, antibiotic and steroid free chicken. She calmly replied, "I guess my daddy knew what he was doing when he built a special grazing square of grass for our chickens. Everybody in the holler said our eggs were the best."
I won't even get into the years I spent working for a firm that represented a major poultry producer...
I am writing to let you know that I did not watch the show. It was recorded on my tivo and I did not watch it. Here's the reason, I don't want to change my eating habits! I'm not in a place where I can afford to pay $27 for a chicken, so the only choice I have is a) become a vegetarian or b) not watch shows or listen to people who will make me feel guilty about the food I eat.
